Harrod explained that before making the decisions, each student’s application was reviewed by multiple members of the Students@SC committee.

“After all reviews were complete, a smaller subset of the applicants were selected based off their overall review scores,” she explained. “Our lead student volunteers were selected for encompassing excellent leadership skills and their desire to be engaged and give back to the HPC community.”

The student leads will work directly with the committee and attend several virtual organizational meetings prior to the conference. They also will get a glimpse of what happens behind the scenes of the conference as they will help select and train the student volunteers and mentor new students. Due to travel uncertainties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, all international students will participate remotely. Local students who want to volunteer remotely also will be provided with this opportunity.

“It is great to have these experienced students returning to the SCinet team to help guide new students through the unique intricacies of building this incredibly fast network where experimenters can show off their research,” Hayden said. “This year, with a hybrid conference, we will be expecting more of our students, and especially student leads, to navigate the challenges of the virtual aspect of the conference. Sushma and Mohammed are intelligent, personable, and engaging and will help make our SCinet build very successful.”

Get to Know Three Leads

Nigel Tan: An Experienced Onsite Lead

For Nigel Tan, SC20 marks his fifth year as an SC student volunteer and his second as a student lead volunteer.

“The community is what brings me back each year,” he explained. “Meeting new people, old friends, and learning the latest advances in HPC straight from the authors is the biggest draw for me. The connections and advice I’ve gotten at SC has already had a huge influence on my education and career path. I first attended SC as a senior undergraduate and wouldn’t have continued on to graduate school were it not for the advice and experiences gained at SC. I even met my current research group, Global Computing Laboratory, at SC a year or two before joining GCL in 2019.”

Needless to say, Tan can be considered an SC connoisseur. Over four years, he has had the opportunity to attend most of the student programs, as well as the technical programs.

“My favorite event is probably the workshops,” Tan said. “They aren’t as involved as the tutorial sessions or as technical as the paper sessions but strike a nice balance with technical content. Poster sessions are a close second. They are always a good place to learn about the most recent advances in HPC.”

He believes that this year will bring new challenges with the novelty of SC20 in a hybrid setting. He is looking forward to working with the committee as a lead.

“Lead volunteers work with the committee to ensure the conference goes smoothly. SC20 will be a big change from past conferences so I’m eager to learn about all the changes that we will make to adapt to the situation,” Tan added. “I think SCinet will be facing the biggest challenges with the hybrid conference. SCinet has traditionally built the fastest network in the world for each conference. With the hybrid conference I’m expecting a different set of challenges as priorities adjust to ensuring that the virtual attendees maintain strong connections to the network.”

This year, Tan expects that SC will confront new challenges, especially related to creating a sustainable path for remote and virtual settings. He explained that having a collaborative medley of academia and industry working on such solutions is an ideal fit to pave that path.

“I’m optimistic with regards to the presentation quality as most attendees have connections to industry and academia,” he noted. “Universities all over the world have shifted to online courses and have encountered many of the problems virtual attendees are likely to have. Industry is in a similar position albeit not necessarily to the same scale. These experiences will help smooth things out. I am a bit worried about more active sessions where discussion is a key part of the event. But having had many video conferencing meetings for courses and research, I think the community is up to the challenge.”

Paula Olaya Garcia: A First-Time Lead Volunteer

Paula Olaya Garcia was prompted to apply as a student volunteer in 2018 by her advisor, Dr. Michela Taufer (University of Tennessee), who also served as SC19 General Chair. After participating as a general student volunteer for two years, Olaya Garcia is looking forward to serving as a student lead for the first time at SC20.

“Each time I attended SC I earn invaluable experience, made friends, as well as contacts. It has enabled me to grow in my academic path,” she said. “I have been a witness of all the hard work provided by the committee members and volunteers. This amazing conference is only possible due to their effort. Now that I have some experience, I look forward to offering my skills and contribute to making SC happen this year. In doing so, I look forward to bringing together the HPC community and in helping generate the collaboration and innovation that SC is known for. I also look forward to working through the challenges of bringing the community together this year in an unprecedented hybrid virtual/physical conference.”

SC’s “magic” has been invaluable to Olaya Garcia as she recounted her most memorable encounter: “When the news about the first picture of a black hole occurred—and the fact that a woman in science made it possible—it created in me a lot of admiration for Dr. Katie Bouman. Her research was changing the world, and it is something of which we all dream. I couldn’t attend her talk at SC19, and that was a huge disappointment for me. However, a few hours later, I was running to my next volunteer shift when I saw her. I decided to approach her. We talked for about 10 minutes, and she advised me about graduate school and told me about her experience and her next goals. I still cannot believe that I had the opportunity to meet and be advised by someone I truly admire. This was all possible because of SC and its endless opportunities.”

SC has provided Olaya Garcia with multiple contacts, ideas, guidance, and support. She aspires to be a scientist and uses SC as her source of inspiration. SC has provided her with internship and collaboration leads, new ideas for her research, names and tools that she can use, and new HPC and academia perspectives. Now, as a first-time lead, she seeks to assure other general student volunteers will have their own “magical” experiences and encounters.

Jonas Posner: A First-Time Virtual Lead Volunteer

Jonas Posner, a doctoral student at the University of Kassel (Germany), will join SC20 as a remote participant. This challenge is motivating Posner, who is quite familiar with SC as he has participated as a student volunteer since 2017. In addition to working as a volunteer, he presented a paper in 2018 and was a student lead volunteer in 2019. He values the feeling of contributing to a great event and “particularly likes the fact that the lead student volunteers are involved in the organizational process early,” citing video conferences even before the conference, regular reviews of student volunteer applications, and meetings directly after the conference. Posner continues to return to SC because each conference has been beneficial to him on many levels.

“It has an unbelievable dimension and provides a lot of great opportunities,” he explained. “I really like the paper presentations, discussing with researchers, but also the social part of the conferences. Over a short time, I have met many interesting people from around the world, and I continue to be in touch with most of them. All of this has broadened my horizon and considerably impacted my research studies. Last year, I was matched with my current mentor in the Mentor-Protégé mixer, and we frequently organize Skype meetings. He shares a lot of useful advice with me that is very beneficial to me for my short- and long-term objectives. I think that this is the best thing that has happened to me at SC so far.”

This year, Posner is eager to be part of the remote team and is full of creative ideas that he is eager to share with his committee, as well as help implement to make a hybrid SC20 conference successful.

“Now that SC has gone hybrid, I am looking forward to November again,” he said. “I like the idea of a mixed conference, and believe that there are many benefits to a virtual setting. It will be more inclusive because anyone will be able to easily attend from their home regardless of their financial capacities, such as travel costs that are often prohibitive to foreigners. This will also solve one big issue that most face while physically attending SC: there are too many interesting events competing with each other. This year, we will be able to watch interesting events on demand that may include chat sessions. I also imagine permanent topic-based channels that could remain in place after the conference. This would inevitably lower the inhibition threshold, especially for students, to ask questions and start discussions. In addition, it would also make it easier to stay in touch with people as contact information could be exchanged more easily.”

The Students@SC program is implementing innovative ideas for SC20 in light of the new challenges that COVID-19 is presenting.

“I’m very excited we’re able to offer remote participation for the Student Volunteers program, the Student Cluster Competition, and HPC Immersion. With the coronavirus pandemic and travel restrictions currently in place, we have realized that many students in our community won’t be able to participate in Atlanta. It is critically important to the SC Conference to continue to create educational, networking, and career opportunities for students unable to attend SC in person,” says Christine Harvey (MITRE Corporation), SC20 Students@SC Chair.

Student Volunteers

The SC20 committee is dedicated to providing the community with the best possible conference experience for all participants. To that end, while we are still planning for an in-person experience, SC20 will also provide remote participation opportunities for the conference in November 2020 for those who are unable to travel to Atlanta due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This means that we will have both a virtual and on-site Student Volunteers Program for SC20. Due to the uncertainty at this time with international travel, only students residing within North America as of November, 2020 are eligible for the on-site Student Volunteers Program. Anyone residing in North America that is concerned with traveling to the conference can also apply for the virtual Student Volunteers Program.

Check out the FAQ for more details on the Student Volunteers program! The deadline for applications is June 26.

Apply to be a student volunteer

Student Cluster Competition

The SC Conference is modifying the Student Cluster Competition to a Virtual Student Cluster Competition (VSCC) at SC20 in order to support remote participation. The computation for this year’s competition will be held completely in the cloud allowing student teams to participate remotely from their home institution, or in person at the conference. This implies that acceptance to and participation in the VSCC will not require on-site participation in Atlanta.

“The entire VSCC will be run on the Microsoft Azure cloud. We are still working on updating the rules to make sure we add new ones that apply to the cloud, and change the ones that don’t make sense when hardware is not on the floor. We will most likely have students manage their cloud dollars rather than their power budget. I don’t want to say too much today though, as we would like to keep some suspense,” shares Scott Michael, VSCC Co-Chair and Manager, Research Applications and Deep Learning, at Indiana University.

Dr. Harvey adds, “Participation in the Student Cluster Competition is an incredible commitment that requires months of planning, coordinating with vendors, and learning cluster management skills. We recognize that for many students and mentors planning travel to Atlanta in November can be overwhelming. Moving the entire SCC to the cloud will help us facilitate teams from around the world while still allowing those that can participate in Atlanta to do so on a level playing field.”

Accepted teams will therefore be given the option to travel to Atlanta and participate in person. This decision must be made by each team by September 1, 2020 to enable the SC Conference sufficient time to plan for accommodations. Depending on restrictions that will be in place in November, the VSCC may need to limit the number of teams allowed to participate and receive accommodations on-site.
The deadline for applications closes July 3.

Apply to the VSCC

HPC Immersion

The SC20 committee is dedicated to providing the community with the best possible conference experience for all participants. To that end, while SC20 is still planning for an in-person experience, it will also provide remote participation opportunities for the conference in November 2020 for those who are unable to travel to Atlanta due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This means that both a virtual and on-site HPC Immersion Program will be implemented. Due to actual international travel uncertainties, only students residing within North America as of November 2020 will be eligible for the on-site HPC Immersion Program. Anyone residing in North America that is concerned with traveling to the conference can also choose to apply for the virtual HPC Immersion Program.

Dr. Harvey shares, “HPC immersion is a brand new program at SC20 to really engage undergraduate students in the field. With the option for remote participation, we should be able to reach a wide range of students and introduce them to a future in HPC. ”

The deadline for applications is June 26.

Apply to HPC Immersion

Networking Opportunities

Students@SC is being very creative in organizing special team building and networking events that make SC such a unique experience for student volunteers.

Dr. Harvey discloses, “Social distancing has forced networking to virtual platforms, which can be limiting to many who are getting started in HPC and working on building their community. We plan to offer virtual networking events for students in our programs and general student attendees. While we’re still working on logistics, we’re looking forward to hosting our annual Mentor-Protégé Program and Speed Mentoring events at SC20.”

Onward and Upward

Dr. Harvey and the whole Students@SC committee are imagining a new era for Students@SC with the goal of retaining the SC philosophy of inclusivity, sharing, and opportunity.

Mohammed Tanash has logged quite a bit of experience as a SC Conference volunteer. From his first time as a student volunteer at SC17 to a lead student volunteer position at SC18, and a SCinet student volunteer on the SC19 wireless team, Tanash has shown he is not afraid of challenges and is not one to give up. Tanash, from Jordan, went to the University of Utara (Malaysia), where he earned a master’s degree in Information Technology. He went on to become a lecturer at Qassim University in Saudi Arabia for four years. Then he chose to pursue another master’s degree at New Mexico State University and has since continued with his doctoral studies at Kansas State University. Notably, Tanash discovered SC student volunteer opportunities while surfing the internet for the best conferences in his field. He was immediately impressed by SC’s diversity of programs and size. He started questioning colleagues about SC and quickly learned that it was “مؤتمر يتحدث عنه الجميع لانه واحد من اكبر المؤتمرات على الاطلاق” (the one that everyone talks about as it is one of the biggest). Realizing SC had a student program, he promptly started the application process.

“يجب أن تكون شخص نشيطً جدًا، وأن يكون لديك إنجازات في مجال الحوسبة عالية الأداء ، وسيرة ذاتية قوية ، بالإضافة إلى خطابات توصية إيجابية ، ليتم قبولك كمتطوع في المؤتمر”

(You need to be very active, have achievements, a strong resume, and positive recommendation letters to be accepted,) he explained.

“نموذج التقديم يتطلب منك التصميم و جهد كبير. حيث يتم اختيار ٢٠ طالب فقط من جميع المتقدمين للانضمام للبرنامج
, لذلك فإن المنافسة ولكنها ليست مستحيلة. لقد تم قبولي كمتطوع في البرنامج ، وكل عام يتم اختيار طلاب اخرين.”

(The application requires a lot of effort and determination. Only 20 students are selected into SCinet, so the competition is tough, though it is not impossible. I got in, and every year others get in.)

As part of his work on the wireless team for SCinet at SC19, Tanash learned how the team provides wireless network connectivity for conference workshops and tutorials, conference committee rooms, exhibit floor, hallways, and other public spaces. Like all SCinet student volunteers, he started his adventure with three days of laying a total of 66 miles of fiber. He then joined the wireless team led by Jeff Hagley, now a Campus Network Support Senior at the University of Michigan. The wireless team closely works with the Edge team to provide stable network connectivity throughout the conference. The SC19 Edge team was led by Angie Asmus, Interim Cybersecurity Team lead/ IT Security Analyst at Colorado State University, and co-lead by Carlos Rojas-Torres, Network Engineer, National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and Front Range Giga Pop (FRGP).

Initially, Tanash expressed was how much he enjoyed working with the wireless and Edge teams. He said they first had to “اتعلم كيفية العمل معا كمجموعة, و كيفية إجراءات العمل, و أيضا العمل ضمن جدول زمني محدد” (learn to work together, the procedures, and timetables.) He found the team leadership very effective.

“لقد تعلمنا كيفية انشاء الشبكات اللاسلكية و ضمان عملها بشكل كامل, بالإضافة الى فهم طريقة عملها بشكل كلي”

(They taught us how to implement the wireless and ensured that we did everything properly, all the while making sure we understood the reasoning for their choices,) Tanash noted.

“تعلمنا أيضا كيفية التعامل و اصلاح الأنظمة, و الجميع كان مستعد و متعاون لارشادنا و تعليمنا”

(We were also taught how to troubleshoot the systems. Everyone was always ready to help and teach us.)

Though he explained it was a very positive experience, Tanash said that it also was a bit challenging at times.

“يجب ان تكون متأكد و تضمن ان الجميع لديهم وصول لشبكة الانترنت”

(You want to make sure that everyone has access to internet,) he said.

It also was physically challenging as Tanash recalled one team member recorded taking 216,666 steps over 17 days—and yes that is slightly more than 95 miles!

Still, he emphasized the benefits of the hands-on experience.

(I am doing research, my work is theoretical, and at SC it is practical work. Students like me don’t get to experience the practical aspects of this field, which can improve our skill sets and overall understanding. We are rarely provided with the opportunity to blend these skills. I also believe that learning the practical aspects and adding these skills to your resume is very beneficial and unique. During the SCinet experience, I was able to see all the other teams, and I was able to collaborate with them. If you are curious, everyone will help you understand what they are doing. You can grow from all aspects and acquire a wide range of skills, as well as an extensive network.)

For many students, the SC experience is a great way to make connections, discover research, and meet people who work in common fields.

“لقد التقيت مع عدد كبير من الخبراء في مجالي العلمي (I met a lot of experts in my field,) Tanash said. لقد تلقيت عدد كبير من النصائح لكي أكون متأكدا انني على الطريق الصحيح و لقد ساعدتني هذه النصائح كثيرا في مجال بحثي” (Getting feedback and making sure I am on the right path has really helped me.)

During his time at SC, he also met Dirk Petersen, a researcher from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, who proved to be very interested in Tanash’s work and offered to collaborate with his organization.

“المشاركة ما تزال قيد النقاش, ولكن انا متطلع للمضي قدما للعمل سوية”

(This is still pending, but we look forward to collaborating together,) Tanash said.

Being a student volunteer also provides full conference access. Tanash used that connectivity to attend the Doctoral Showcase, where he was able to see what other people were working on.

“الاطلاع على الأبحاث الأخرى فتحت لي المجال للتفكير”

(Seeing other research is also an eye-opener,) he explained.

“هنالك تستطيع انشاء علاقات عمل وتشارك العمل مع الخبراء في مجالك العلمي. هذا المؤتمر قبل كل شيء هو أرضية مثالية لتقديم أبحاثك وأفكارك و توضيحها وتبادلها.”

(There you can make connections, collaborate, and seek out collaborative opportunities. It is foremost, a perfect ground for presenting your research and ideas to elaborate and exchange.)

Still, Tanash has not reached all of his SC goals yet—he submitted a paper for SC19 that was not selected for presentation. He still expects that SC20 will change that with his submitted paper, Improving HPC System Performance by Predicting Job Resources via Supervised Machine Learning. And, once again, he applied to be a student volunteer and has high hopes to join as a SCinet student lead volunteer.

Inspired by Mohammed’s story? Apply to be an SC20 student volunteer. The deadline for applications closes June 26.
