SUMMARY:Team Peking University
DESCRIPTION:Posters, Virtual Student Cluster Competition\n\nTeam Peking Un
iversity\n\nLiang, Xu, Fan, Pan, Gu...\n\n# Motivation for participating i
n the competition\n\nThe Peking University Super-computing Team was establ
ished in Autumn 2015 and gathered students enthusiastic in HPC and compute
r systems. Our team participated in the Student Cluster Competition at SC
in 2016, 2017, and 2019, IBM OpenCAPI 2018, and ASC Student Supercomputer
Challenge in 2019.\n\nOur team consists of members interested in hardware
and software technologies related to super-computing and scientific-comput
ing. Our team members are from several different departments at Peking Uni
versity, including the School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Scie
nce (EECS), the Department of Physics, and the Yuanpei College. We form a
team that combines the strength of its members from various backgrounds. \
n\nAll of our members stand out in a way: Pengcheng Xu, our team lead, has
profound system building and operational maintenance skills; Zejia Fan an
d Hangrui Bi are enthusiastic senior students interested in machine learni
ng; Yuxuan Yan, from the Department of Physics, is experienced in developi
ng and building HPC applications, particularly physics-related application
s; Fangyuan Yang, a new member, is interested in software-defined hardware
technology; Zhewen Hao is a freshman passionate about parallel algorithms
. Some members previously participate in SC19 and ASC19. The strength and
diversity of this team give us the ability to handle a wide range of probl
ems.\n\nOur mentor, Prof. Yun Liang, from the School of EECS, helps us in
many ways. His research achievements in HPC, computer architecture, hetero
geneous computing, and his devotion to undergraduate education highly supp
ort our preparation for the competition.\n\n# Outcome the team expects fro
m the competition (e.g., how will HPC impact the team's academic careers?)
\n\nAs HPC is becoming a vital part of computer science and fields in natu
ral science, we believe that taking part in the Student Cluster Competitio
n will benefit our academic careers. Through optimizing and tuning real-wo
rld HPC applications, every team member gains a rich experience in HPC alo
ng with the chance to tackle the cutting-edge problems in the related doma
ins. The experience has encouraged us to utilize HPC in our research and w
ork as well.\n\nApart from academic benefits for the team members, we beli
eve that the experience will foster vital problem-solving skills. The team
's participation in previous years proved to be very beneficial. In 2017,
our proposed cluster got featured on the SCC List of TOP 500 Supercomputer
 s. Our team has been invited to submit our reproducibility reports to PARC
O and TPDS for every participation. We have been steadily building a diver
se skill set to tackle the challenging benchmarks and applications in the
competition. We believe that these skills will undoubtedly benefit student
s' future careers greatly.\n\nDetermined to push our limits, our team memb
ers started preparing for this year's competition early, with guidance fro
m our mentor Prof. Yun Liang. With our joint efforts, we are sure that we
will gain a favorable ranking this year. And as Peking University is one o
f the top universities in China, our participation in SCC will promote HPC
education in China and Asia.\n\nTag: Student Program\n\nRegistration Cate
