SUMMARY:Broadening Participation via Computer Systems Genome Research Grou
 p
DESCRIPTION:Workshop\n\nBroadening Participation via Computer Systems Geno
me Research Group\n\nEllis, Cameron, Back\n\nThe mission of the Computer S
ystems Genome Project (CSGenome) is to conduct the first scientific effort
to catalog the lineage of computer system performance over time to enable
knowledge discovery and further understanding of the impact of computing
innovations on transformative technologies, the knowledge-based economy, a
nd societal change. This work is powered by a large group of undergraduat
e research students with the specific intention to engage a broader group
of students in computer systems research. \n\nFacilitation of this suppor
tive research team has propagated the recruitment and retention of a diver
se set of students in an area of computer science that traditionally lacks
such representation of women, black students, and students with disabilit
ies. This talk will address team culture, management, and communication s
trategies that enable an encouraging learning and research environment for
a diverse group of undergraduate students. The supportive community atmos
phere promotes a sense of belonging for students and acquisition of practi
cal skills develops their self-efficacy. Several such students have chose
n to pursue graduate studies in computer systems.\n\nTag: Education, Train
ing and Outreach, HPC Training and Education\n\nRegistration Category: Wor
